In the Book of Beowulf it starts off with King Hrothgar building a mead hall for his people called Herot, and in the mead hall he would celebrate his victories, house his followers, and perpetuate his fame. Until one day after a long time of holding back his anger from the people of Herot Grendel, a horrible demon who lives in the swamplands of Hrothgar’s kingdom decided to go and attack their hall. Grendel terrorizes the Danes every night, killing them and defeating their efforts to fight back. The Danes suffer many years of fear, danger, and death from the effcts of Grendel until one day a Geatish warrior named Beowulf hears a call for help from Hrothgar. He decided to go over to their land and fight for his power and their freedom. As Beowulf gathers a small group of men they sail to Denmark to awnser to the call for help determined to defeat Grendel once and for all. As they arrive some of the Danes are very skeptical of Beowulf and why he wanted to help them until the feast the night of their arrival Beowulf performs a boast about himself and gains a little more of their trust. At last, however, Grendel arrives. Beowulf fights him unarmed, proving that he was stronger then the demon without weapons to protect him. As Grendel struggled to escape Beowulf tears his arm off and leaves him to die. Would and dying Grendel goes back to his dark swamp to die. The severed arm is hung high in the mead-hall as a trophy of victory. Overjoyed, Hrothgar showers Beowulf with gifts and treasure at a feast in his honor although they beat one beast; evil was still lingering in the air. Soon enough Grendel’s mother, a swamp-hag who lives in the lake with Grendel, comes to Herot seeking revenge for her son’s death. As she comes to kill a few Geats Beowulf decied to follow her back to the swamp where Beowulf would battle her in her own land. He kills her with a sword, meanwhile finding Grendel’s corpse, he decapitated it and brought it back to the Hrothgar as a prize. The Danes are overjoyed and celebrate his victories again while Beowulf’s fame spreads across the kingdom. Beowulf departs after a sad goodbye to Hrothgar, who has taken him under his wing and treated him like a son. He returns to Geatland, where they reunited with their king and queen. Beowulf then hands over most of his treasure to Hygelac, who, in turn, rewards him. Later the king of the Geats dies and Beowulf is chosen to take over. He rules for fifty years until a dragon comes lurking into their land angry because his things have been stolen. Beowulf once again decided to battle the dragon and defeat him to keep his people safe. Sensing his death approaching Beowulf enterers his final battle and kills the dragon but also gets killed while doing it. As Beowulf is dragged out bit in the neck, venom was slowly killing him, his people knew that he was gone. After Beowulf's death his people they burn his body on a huge funeral pyre and then bury him with a massive treasure in a barrow overlooking the sea.
